The short answer

Start PR when you have news worth reporting: a funding round, a launch, a customer result or a founder story with a point of view. Before that, get the basics right: a clear story, a credible website and a visible founder.

When to start

PR is not a day one job. It pays off when trust, hiring or funding depends on being known: before a raise, around a launch, when entering a new market or when competitors are louder than you. Until then, a clean website, a founder profile and a few customer proof points do more than a retainer.

What counts as news for a startup

  • Funding, with a clear reason and a use of funds.
  • A product launch that solves a problem journalists can describe in a sentence.
  • Customer results with a named customer and a number.
  • Original data or research from your own platform.
  • A founder's view on an issue that is already in the news.
  • Hiring, expansion and partnerships, when they signal something bigger.

Where to aim

Tech and business press, newsletters and podcasts reach investors, hires and early adopters. Trade titles reach buyers. National and city outlets matter when the story has mass appeal or a local angle. Pick two or three targets and learn them, rather than chasing every outlet.

Make the founder the channel

People follow people. A founder with a clear position and a steady presence in search and social gives every later story something to attach to. See our guide to personal branding for executives, and the ranking of agencies for personal brands.

DIY, freelancer or agency

Do it yourself for the first few stories while the story is still forming. Add a freelancer for pitching once you have a steady stream of news. Hire an agency when you need speed, contacts and strategy together. Published guidance puts retainers from $2,000 to $10,000 and above a month. The cost guide shows the sources.

Questions

Do startups need PR?

Not on day one. PR becomes useful when credibility affects funding, hiring or sales. Until then, focus on a clear story, a strong site and customer proof.

How much should a startup spend on PR?

There is no standard figure. Published guidance puts monthly retainers from $2,000 to $10,000 and above, and projects from $5,000 to $50,000 and above. Agree scope and measures in writing first.
