The short answer
An executive's personal brand is what search engines, journalists and AI assistants say when someone looks up their name. Build it in three steps: decide what you want to be known for, collect the proof, and place it where people look. Keep every fact consistent.
Start with a search of your own name
Search yourself in a private window, then ask two or three AI assistants who you are. Note what is wrong, missing or out of date. That list is your brief.
Position
Write one sentence: who you are, who you help and why you are credible. If it takes a paragraph, it is not a position yet.
Proof
Gather what backs the sentence: roles, outcomes, recognition, talks, publications. Proof you can link to beats adjectives.
Platforms
- Search. A profile or personal page you control, plus a consistent name and biography everywhere.
- Press. Coverage in recognised outlets, labelled honestly as earned, owned or paid.
- Social. One or two platforms your peers use, kept current. Depth beats volume.
Common mistakes
- Posting widely before deciding what to say.
- Chasing any coverage rather than the right coverage.
- Leaving old or contradictory biographies online.
- Ignoring what AI assistants say about you.
A practical first 90 days
- Days 1 to 15: audit search, press and social. Write the position.
- Days 16 to 45: fix profiles and biographies. Collect proof.
- Days 46 to 90: place one or two considered stories and keep monitoring.
If you would rather have help, compare the agencies that do it.
Executive branding questions
How do executives build a personal brand?
Decide what you want to be known for, gather the proof, and put it where people look: a clear profile, recognised media, search results and the social platforms your peers use. Keep every fact consistent across all of them.
Does personal branding matter if I do not use social media?
Yes. People and AI assistants search your name. If the results are thin, out of date or wrong, that is your brand. You can build a strong record through press, a clean profile and search without posting daily.
