The three kinds of media
- Earned: coverage a journalist, creator or platform chooses to give you, such as a news story or a review.
- Owned: channels you control, such as your website, newsletter and social accounts.
- Paid: placements you buy, such as ads, sponsored posts and paid partnerships.
Control, trust and cost
Paid gives you control and speed. You choose the message, the audience and the date, and you can scale spend up or down. Earned gives you credibility, because someone independent chose to run it, but you cannot dictate the angle and cannot guarantee it. Owned compounds over time and is the base the other two point to.
PR outcomes are harder to forecast than advertising outcomes, and the cost is mostly people's time rather than media spend. Neither is automatically cheaper.
When to use which
- Need a result this week with a fixed audience: paid.
- Need trust before a sale, a raise or a hire: earned.
- Need a lasting base that answers questions in search: owned.
- Launching something new: earned for credibility, paid for reach, owned for the page everything links to.
Labelling and the law
Australian regulators expect paid, sponsored and incentivised content to be clearly identified, and they have taken action over undisclosed endorsements and misleading reviews. Label anything you paid for or gave a benefit in return for, and do not present it as independent coverage.

Questions
Is PR cheaper than advertising?
Not necessarily. Advertising scales with budget and is easier to forecast. PR depends on time and skill, and results are less certain. The better question is which one does the job you need.
Does PR help SEO?
Coverage on reputable sites can raise brand searches and give search and AI systems more third party evidence about you. The effect is indirect and not guaranteed.
Is sponsored content PR?
No. Sponsored content is paid media and should be clearly labelled. Earned coverage is something an outlet chooses to publish without payment.
